What exactly IS a Dead Hedge?
What is a Dead Hedge?
A dead hedge is a barrier constructed from cut branches, saplings, and foliage. The material can be gathered from activities such as pruning or clearing, in traditional woodland management.
Why use them?
Dead hedges are great for many reasons!
Keeping wooded areas tidy and safer for traversing.
Forming natural barriers or fences without the need to use construction materials.
Providing corridors for small wildlife, which helps with conservation of ecological diversity in the area.
Natural barriers which can help mitigate interaction with larger wildlife by gently redirecting them around camping areas.
Offer habitats for insects, and shelter and feeding opportunities for small mammals and birds.
Provide a carbon-efficient way of recycling biomass, without the need for transport or burning. Keeping the carbon sequestered in a useful format.
Clearing combustible materials and leaving the ground bare in large areas can help to reduce the spread of fires, and make firefighting easier.
