General Information

  • What type of campground is this?

  • Storia Vale is a young private camp ground and a passion project for the owner, Tor. Always evolving and constantly improving, Tor works on site regularly and is constantly improving the property. For now the camp hosts basic tenting sites, space for small campers, and a couple of outfitted stays. There are garden beds and artistic spaces throughout the property. There is a ravine, creek, and vista area which are open to campers to explore, though there are no official trails yet cut through the treed areas of the property. Please use caution if you choose to explore the wilderness.

  • Where is the campground located?

  • Storia Vale is located at 9046 Painted Cliffs Private Road.

  • Approximately 40 - 50 minute drive from Downtown Kelowna (50km).

  • 25 minute drive to Big White (30km).

  • 5 minute drive to Thunder Mountain Raceway (7.5km)

  • 10 minute drive to Kelowna Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club (10 km)

  • 13 minute drive to Idabel Lake for swimming (10 km)

  • 10 minutes to Hydraulic Lake Campground (10 km)

  • Storia Vale is about half way between Beaverdell and Kelowna.

  • What are the campground's hours/seasons?

  • Storia Vale is a three season camp which closes throughout the winter/snow months. During open seasons the camp is open 24/7 with booking dates available every day.

  • How many campsites are available?

  • There are currently two listed camp sites available as well as open spaces for trailer and RV parking. More stays and sites are coming soon.

  • What types of campsites are offered?

  • The camp sites offered at Storia Vale have grass/dirt ground and some trees and shrubbery. Dead hedges are constructed to offer additional privacy between campers. The sites are fairly large and not cramped together. Outhouse facilities and a wash station with potable water access are shared by all campers. Each site comes with one dedicated parking space, there is additional vehicle parking available, please enquire with your host about where to park additional vehicles.

  • Are reservations required?

  • Yes reservations are required to stay at the camp ground. Same-day reservations may be available but it is always recommended to book and plan your stay in advance.

  • Can I choose my specific campsite?

  • You will make a site selection at the time of creating your booking reservation. Please only camp within the site that you have reserved.

  • What are the check-in and check-out times?

  • Check-in times begin at 3pm, check-out is 11am.

Reservations & Pricing

  • How much does it cost to stay?

  • Reservation pricing is dependent upon which type of site or stay you choose to book. Please explore our “Book Now” section to see rates and availability.

  • What is included in the campsite fee?

  • The camp site cost includes up to 6 campers, 2 pets, and one vehicle. Campground amenities vary by chosen stay type, please check your individual booking information listing to see all included amenities. Fees for additional vehicles, pets, or people may apply.

  • What is the cancellation/refund policy?

  • Bookings cancelled with greater than 48 hours notice are refunded in full.

  • Bookings cancelled with less than 48 hours notice are non-refundable.

  • Can I change my reservation?

  • Yes. Please use the booking link received in your booking email to make changes to your booking. If you should encounter difficulties with making changes to your booking, please contact us:

  • Is a deposit required?

  • Pricing structures, fees, deposits, and payment timelines may vary depending on your booking platform. Please closely read und understand your booking and booking confirmation for exact rates.

  • Are there discounts for longer stays or groups?

  • Should you wish to book a group or stay length that falls outside of the allowable rates and sizes outlined on the booking portal, please contact us directly to discuss options.

  • Do you accept walk-ins?

  • Walk-in or last minute bookings may be accommodated if there are available sites which haven’t been pre-booked. All bookings are to be made and paid through Storia Vale’s online booking portals. Bookings can be made same day upon arrival, subject to site availability.

Campsites

  • What size tents/RVs can each site accommodate?

  • Storia Vale is not equipped with RV hook-ups of any kind. Each site has a unique size, layout, and characteristic. There is ample space for tents of most sizes. Smaller trailers or car-tents will easily fit at most sites. If you wish to park a larger camping vehicle it is best to contact us to ensure we have appropriate space for your needs.

  • Are sites powered?

  • No, there is limited electricity in Storia Vale as we are off-grid and rely on solar power. There are outlets available should you need to charge phones or other small electronics.

  • Is water available at the site?

  • There is a wash station that is shared by campers. The wash station supplies potable water.

  • Are fire pits provided?

  • Stone fire circles are built at each site. Never build a new fire circle.

  • Are picnic tables provided?

  • There are picnic tables for guests to use, however not every site has a picnic table.

  • Are campsites shaded or private?

  • Each camp site is unique. Every effort has been made to preserve as many trees as possible on the property. Each site will have some degree of tree cover, shade, and shrubs. Privacy fences (dead hedges) are constructed between sites to offer some visual cover and privacy. The sites are generally spaced out and not too cramped but they are not completely private from each other and are all viewable from the main driveway area.

  • Can I have multiple tents on one site?

  • Yes, multiple tents are permitted.

  • Can I park my vehicle at my campsite?

  • Each site is provided with one parking space, please enquire about where to park additional vehicles. Never block the main driveway as other campers and staff may need to have access to all parts of the property.

  • Are generators allowed?

  • Yes generators may be used between 9am and 10pm.

  • Are there quiet hours?

  • Quiet hours are from 10pm to 9am.

Facilities & Amenities

  • Are there bathrooms?

  • Currently there are outhouse facilities located throughout the property. Indoor washrooms with running water are under construction.

  • Are showers available?

  • No, there are currently no showers available.

  • Is there potable drinking water?

  • Yes, a wash station with potable water access is located near the info board (seacan) and is shared by all campers.

  • Is there a dump station?

  • No, there are no dump stations or garbage/recycling collection available. Please pack out everything you bring with you. Be a good camper and “Leave no trace.”

  • Are there laundry facilities?

  • No

  • Is Wi-Fi available?

  • Yes, there is wi-fi available throughout the property. There is NO CELL RECEPTION at Storia Vale. It is highly recommended to enable wi-fi calling on your devices and download offline maps before travelling to the area.

  • Is there cell service?

  • There is NO CELL RECEPTION at Storia Vale. It is highly recommended to enable wi-fi calling on your devices and download offline maps before travelling to the area.

  • Is there a camp store?

  • There is currently no store at Storia Vale. The closest locations to purchase food and supplies are located in Beaverdell or Big White. Please ensure you have everything you need before arriving. Your host will try to help out in a pinch if you are missing something but there is no guarantee that any specific item may be available on site.

  • Is firewood available for purchase?

  • Firewood is currently provided free of charge. We are in the process of clearing deadfall for maintenance and fire prevention of the property, so there is abundant deadfall available for burning. Never cut down trees or remove branches from live trees.

  • Are there cooking facilities?

  • There is a propane BBQ available to be used by guests. It is located near the info board on the seacan. Outfitted stays also contain butane gas burners for cooking and boiling water.

  • Is there a playground or recreation area?

  • There is currently no dedicated recreation area or playground on site.

All About Campfires & Cooking

  • Are campfires allowed?

YES! (unless there is a fire ban) We all know that one of the BEST parts of going camping is getting to spend time around a campfire!

Please help keep yourself and the surrounding area SAFE by following fire safety rules. Always follow BC fire regulations, listed on the Info board. 

NEVER start fires during times of FIRE BAN

You can locate the current fire risk/ban status located at the camp info board or HERE.

Campfire Rules:

  • Only have outdoor fires when there is no current fire ban in place.

  • Assess the current risk level/dryness of the area and use good judgement. (Check the camp info board for any current fire bans/advisories)

  • Only burn within designated, pre-existing ringed, fire pit areas. 

  • DO NOT build new fire pits anywhere on the property.

  • Always ensure the hose (Or full buckets of water, supplied by the wash station) are brought near to the fire site and ready to be used immediately in case of emergency or to douse fire.

  • Do not use split and stacked firewood for outdoor fires. (It takes a lot of effort to split, stack, and dry wood) This wood is intended only for use in outfitted cabin wood stoves for cooking and heat. 

  • Campfire wood may be gathered from designated fuel areas or from deadfall on the ground anywhere on the property. Helping to clean up the forest floor is good mitigation of fire risk and is much appreciated!

  • Do not remove limbs from living trees! There is plenty of wood to be found already on the ground. 

  • Piles of deadfall and slash may be prepared for campfire use near the ringed fire pit areas, or between camp sites, feel free to burn these.

  • Ensure your fire stays within the confines of the fire ring! Do not allow a blaze to grow too large. 

  • When finished with your fire, ensure it is well and truly doused. Use the hose (or supplied buckets to completely flood the fire pit. Turn cooled logs and use a stick or shovel to stir the pit to ensure all coals are thoroughly extinguished.

Fire is the biggest RISK to Storia Vale!

Please be considerate and thoughtful to your surroundings and BURN SAFELY!

  • Is charcoal allowed?

  • Charcoal may be used within appropriate charcoal grills. Charcoal and charcoal cooking devices are not supplied, please ensure you bring your own if you wish to use one.

  • Are there seasonal fire bans?

  • Yes, unfortunately the Okanagan is very prone to tinder dry and dangerous conditions. Fire bans are common in the summer and fall months. Bans are to be strictly followed, any camper found to be having a fire during a fire ban will be immediately expelled from the property.

  • Are BBQs provided?

  • There is one BBQ available for campers to use and is to be shared by all guests.

  • Can campers bring their own propane BBQ?

  • Yes, campers are more than welcome to bring contained cooking devices, fire pits, and grills.

Smoking

Smoking of weed, vapes, and cigarettes is permitted OUTSIDE of your accommodation. If you smoke, please adhere to the following:

  • Only smoke within YOUR site.

  • Ensure your smoke is not bothersome to any other guests.

  • All butts are to be disposed of within:

    • Your trash, once FULLY EXTINGUISHED!

    • A fire pit

    • An outhouse hole

  • ANY butts found on the ground or within your stay will result in a 1 star cleanliness rating, reduction in overall rating on your booking platform and potential refusal of future bookings at Storia Vale.

  • You may be asked to leave immediately if butts are persistently found during your stay. 

Discarded butts are unsightly, bad for the environment, and an unacceptable FIRE HAZARD.

Fire is the biggest risk to Storia Vale and the surrounding wilderness. We appreciate your assistance in helping us to keep Storia Vale beautiful and safe!

Pets

We LOVE pets! Pets are welcome at Storia Vale! However, please abide by the following rules to keep everyone happy and safe while visiting!

  • Pets are to be kept ON LEASH or in a carrier or vehicle at all times.

  • Pick up any and all messes left by pets. AKA Stoop and scoop please!

  • Be aware that the area is home to PREDATORS such as coyotes, bears, hawks, and more. Always keep your pet within view so that you can ensure its safety. 

  • Please be aware that there are others living in the area who have dogs that are occasionally off-leash and may wander onto the property. These are family pets and friendly. Please respect pets and owners.

  • Do not allow your pet to be a nuisance to neighbors or other guests. Please do your best to ensure that they are not causing damage or excessive noise.

  • Is there a pet fee?

  • Up to two pets may accompany each booking free of charge. A fee may be applied for additional pets.

  • Must pets be leashed?

  • Yes, please keep all pets leashed to ensure their safety.

  • Are there restricted areas for pets?

  • There is no fenced or dedicated area specifically for pets, nor is any section of camp off-limits to pets. Please use good judgement.

  • Can pets be left unattended?

  • No, owners are responsible for their pets behavior and safety while on premises and as such, the expectation is for pets to never be left unattended.

Groups & Visitors

  • Are children welcome?

  • Certainly children are more than welcome with adult supervision.

  • Are group bookings available?

  • Numbers of guests must be indicated at the time a reservation is made.

  • Can I have visitors at my campsite?

  • Visitors are welcome, additional fees may apply if guests are added to overnight stays.

  • Is there a limit on the number of guests?

  • Please be considerate and reasonable with numbers of guests. Though there is currently no specific cap on guest numbers, the amenities on the property are reflected in the limits placed on number of campers per site.

  • Are large gatherings permitted?

  • Please contact us to arrange details and permission for any large gathering you wish to plan on site.

  • Are there designated group camping areas?

  • Each site has a specified number of allowable guests. This is reflective of available amenities on site such as outhouses, electricity, parking, and water availability. If you wish to host a large group, please contact us directly to arrange details.

  • Can I host an event or party?

  • If you wish to host an event, please contact us directly to arrange details.

Vehicles & RVs

  • Are RVs allowed?

  • There is space available to park an RV on site. There are no hook ups or dump stations available for RVs. Please contact us directly for clarification if you should need to park an RV.

  • Are trailers allowed?

  • Most sites may be able to accommodate small trailers or vehicle tents.

  • Is there a maximum number of vehicles per site?

  • Each site is provided with parking for one vehicle. Extra parking may be offered for an additional fee.

  • Is parking available for additional vehicles?

  • Additional parking is available, fees may apply.

  • Are electric vehicle charging stations available?

  • No, Storia Vale is off-grid with limited solar power generation and is not suitably equipped to charge electric vehicles.

  • Can boats, ATVs, or other recreational vehicles be stored onsite?

  • No, Storia Vale is not a storage or parking facility.

Activities & Surroundings

  • What activities are available at the campground?

  • Guests are welcome to explore the property. Currently there are a couple of nice view points that overlook the vale and creek that run through the property. The terrain to the uninhabited areas of the property is quite rough. Please use caution while traversing the wilder areas of the grounds. We do intend to cut trails for hiking in future.

  • Are there hiking trails nearby?

  • There are hiking, biking, and snowshoe trails nearby. It is always recommended that you research these and attend them based on your confidence and skill level. Please be advised that there is no cell reception in the area. Ensure you have downloaded offline maps before setting off on local trails.

  • Is swimming available?

  • The creek which runs through Storia Vale is itself not a great place for people to swim as it can run very low in summer months and tends to be brackish. Pets may enjoy taking a splash in it, though please use caution while traversing the steep rock cut into the vale.

  • There are several places to swim within a short car ride of Storia Vale:

    • Idabel Lake Community Reservoir (12 minutes/11km)

    • McCulloch Reservoir Recreation Site (14 minutes/11km)

    • Joe Rich Creek (Pull offs near Joe Rich Fire Hall, 14 minutes/21km)

  • Is fishing allowed?

    • No, we do not have appropriate wilderness areas for fishing.

  • Are bicycles allowed?

    • Cyclists are absolutely welcome, the driveways are gravel and sand, please use caution while navigating bicycles on site.

  • What attractions are nearby?

    • 25 minute drive to Big White (30km)

      • Winter sports, mountain biking, tourist sites, chairlift, hiking trails, restaurants, shopping

    • 5 minute drive to Thunder Mountain Raceway (7.5km)

    • 10 minute drive to Kelowna Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club (10 km)

    • 13 minute drive to Idabel Lake for swimming/kayaking/canoeing (10 km)

    • 10 minutes to Hydraulic Lake Campground (10 km)

  • Are there grocery stores or restaurants nearby?

    • The closest locations to purchase food and supplies are located in Beaverdell or Big White.

  • Is the campground accessible to public transportation?

    • There is no public transportation in the area.

Accessibility

  • Are accessible campsites available?

    • Storia Vale is a rough, off-grid camp ground. The roadways and grounds are uneven and may prove difficult for accessibility purposes.

Rules & Safety

  • What are the campground rules?

    • Follow all rules and guidelines found throughout this FAQ page. Further rules and guidelines can be found posted on the INFO board at camp as well as in Welcome binders found within outfitted stays.

    • NO FIRES during times of fire ban:

      • Starting a fire during a fire ban is grounds for immediate expulsion from camp.

      • Throwing cigarette butts on the ground is grounds for immediate expulsion from camp. Cigarette butts are one of the greatest risk factors for starting a forest fire.

    • Do not use any axes or other sharp/cutting tools such as pickaxes or saws found around the property. These tools are for the use of staff ONLY and are not meant for guests.

    • Storia Vale is NOT a place for the ingestion of illicit drugs.

      • There is a zero tolerance policy for any ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES.

    • This is a WORKING property. Tree clearing, trench digging, and other construction may be happening at any time during your stay.

    • Pack-in and pack out ALL trash and recyclables.

      • Storia Vale does not have garbage collection services available at this time due to its remote location.

    • Watch your step when moving about the property, this is wilderness, tree roots, thistles, branches, rocks, and uneven ground are abundant. Please stay aware of your surroundings.

    • Do not approach or feed wildlife. Observe from a safe distance.

    • Keep all food and garbage stored responsibly to avoid attracting wildlife.

    • This is a rustic camp ground, the expectation is for guests to be self-reliant, as you would be when camping in a national park or other remote landscape.

      • Your host is happy to help out if possible if you have forgotten an item or have a concern (Though the item may not be available), please do your best to be adequately prepared for the situation.

  • What are the quiet hours?

  • Quiet hours are from 10pm - 9am.

    • Despite its remote location, Storia Vale DOES have neighbors and other guests. Please be respectful with noise levels at all times.

    • Excessive yelling or loud music will not be tolerated.

  • Is alcohol permitted?

    • Yes alcohol is permitted, please drink responsibly.

    • Do not drink and drive.

    • Be respectful when drinking, maintain appropriate behavior and noise levels at all times.

  • Are weapons permitted?

    • No, Storia Vale is not a place for weapons or firearms. There is a zero tolerance policy for any threatening behavior towards wildlife, guests, or staff. This includes the carrying or brandishing of weapons.

    • This is a wilderness location, we respect guests need for personal protective items and tools such as bear spray, camping/cooking knives, hatchets, lighters etc. Be responsible with such items at all times and keep them stored safely unless in use.

    • Storia Vale is not responsible for personal injury, loss, incident, or death incurred by guests through use of such tools.

  • What should I do in case of an emergency?

    • Before arriving in the area (there is no cell reception) ensure that you have wi-fi calling enabled.

    • Ensure you get on the camp wi-fi upon arrival so that you can make phone calls in case of emergencies.

    • Always call 911 in cases of emergency or serious injury.

    • In case of uncontrolled fire, call *5555 on cell OR 1-800-663-5555 toll free to report a fire.

    • Inform staff of any emergency or serious injury as soon as it is practical to do so.

    • Use common sense and remove yourself and others (including pets and property) from dangerous situations as realistically and practically as possible.

    • Be aware that there are any number of potentially hazardous natural and man-made elements in the area. Always use common sense and maintain awareness of your surroundings.

  • Is there staff onsite?

    • The camp owner as well as other workers will often be found working around the property.

  • Is the campground monitored or gated?

    • The camp ground is gated/chained closed during the off-season. All items of value are removed to storage locations while camp is close.

    • The camp is monitored 24/7 by security cameras which have motion capture and remote viewing access by the owner.

    • Camp staff perform rounds and monitor the grounds.

  • What wildlife might campers encounter?

    Storia Vale is home to MANY animals! Most of which are interesting and generally harmless to observe, including:

    • Deer

    • Hawks

    • Rabbits

    • Chipmunks

    • Squirrels

    • Weasels

    • Foxes

    • Neighbors off-leash dogs

    • Mice and other small rodents

    • Ravens

    • Steller’s Jays

    • Robins

    • Humming birds

    • Many small birds

    • A variety of insects and spiders

    • Harmless snakes (Garters, Rubber Boas, Gopher Snakes etc.)

      • Always be aware and cautious while observing any wildlife.

  • Are there potentially dangerous animals to consider?

    Yes! There are animals in the area that warrant caution and awareness.

  • Should you see/encounter any of the following it is advised to use caution, remove yourself from the situation, and advise staff of the sighting so other campers can be informed.

    • Coyotes: Commonly sighted in the area.

    • Moose: Commonly sighted in the area.

    • Bears: Are common in the area though staff have yet to encounter one on/near the property itself.

    • Cougars: Are possible in the area, but there are no known sightings in recent years.

    • Grey Wolves: Are possible in the area, but sightings are rare.

    • Rattlesnakes: There are rattlers in and around the Okanagan, though Storia Vale is at a high elevation which gets quite cold in winter and is not likely to be a hospitable habitat for them. It IS possible that they could be in the area.

  • What should I do if I encounter wildlife?

    • Do not approach, feed, touch, or pick up any wild animals.

    • Take photos from a safe distance.

    • If a potentially dangerous animal such as a moose, bear, cougar, rattlesnake, wolf, or coyote is close to your site, it is recommended that you get in your vehicle for safety and prepare leave the area if necessary.

Weather & Seasonal Questions

  • What is the weather typically like?

    • Weather is unpredictable at best, always check the 14 day and 7 day forecast ahead of your trip dates to get the most accurate indication of what weather to expect during your stay!

    • Spring weather is generally mild during the daytime with frequent rain showers. Occasional flurries or hail can be expected. Night time temperatures can go to zero or below well into May.

    • Summer weather is generally hot and dry with frequent fire bans beginning in June or July from little to no rainfall and extreme dry conditions. Night time temperatures can dip relatively cool even in the hot summer months.

    • Fall weather can be unpredictable, some years it can be warm, clear, and pleasant well into November. Other years can be rainy, wet, and cold starting in mid September all the way until winter.

    • Always bring appropriate seasonal gear in anticipation of precipitation and temperature changes.

  • Does the campground operate year-round?

    • Currently Storia Vale is open from mid April to mid October only.

  • What happens if severe weather occurs?

    • Most weather incidents are not severe enough to warrant closures or changes to bookings.

    • Reservations will not be refunded due to expected weather, such as normal rain events or slight flurries in spring.

    • In the event of an extreme weather event, wildfire, or other unanticipated extreme circumstance the camp may be closed or evacuated.

    • In case of unforeseeable circumstance or extreme event, refunds may be issued for impacted bookings. Each instance will be evaluated by the owner and acted upon with common sense and in good faith.

  • Are there restrictions during wildfire season?

    • Fire bans are common and strictly adhered to in summer and fall.

  • Are roads accessible during winter?

    • No.

Before You Arrive

  • What should I bring?

  • Storia Vale is an off-grid rustic camp, there is no store on site or nearby. Please come with all food and supplies you anticipate needing during your stay. This includes ice, food, drinks (potable water is available on-site), weather gear, camping gear, cooking gear. If you find that you have forgotten something staff are happy to assist if possible, but there is no guarantee that we will be able to provide any specific item(s).
